The TCL vi-Serial was one of our favorite TV lines last year, offering incredible dissimilarity and color for a very reasonable price. Design

Like the 2018 half-dozen-Serial, the latest models look expensive and premium, if not especially sleek. Like all other Roku TVs and media streamers, you can also command the vi-Series through the free Roku app for Android and iOS.

Roku Television receiver provides access to a wide multifariousness of streaming media, including Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music, Crunchyroll, Google Play Movies & Boob tube (but non Google Play Music), Hulu, Netflix, Sling Television set, Spotify, Tidal, and YouTube. The simply notable omission for video streaming is Twitch, which still isn't bachelor on Roku.

While Roku Telly is a capable streaming platform with lots of services, it doesn't take much to offer beyond streaming media. You can search for content with your phonation using the remote, but you won't get an Alexa- or Google Banana-like total voice assistant experience from it. We test TVs with a Klein One thousand-10A colorimeter, a Murideo SIX-G signal generator, Portrait Displays' CalMAN software, and an X-rite i1 Pro ii spectrometer using methodology based on Imaging Science Foundation'south scale techniques.

Out of the box, with an HDR signal, the 6-Series shows a peak brightness of 603.258cd/mⁱⁱ when displaying a full screen of white, and an impressively high 1,126.73cd/yardⁱⁱ when displaying an eighteen-percent field. The TV shows a blackness level of 0.055cd/m^two in this mode, for an effective contrast ratio of 20,486:i. This is excellent for an inexpensive TV, with a panel over twice as bright as last year's 6-Series (497.15cd/1000²). However, the blackness level is as well higher (compared with 0.01cd/thousand²), which results in a lower (but still fantastic for its price) contrast ratio than last year's 6-Series (49,715:i). The much brighter picture is a worthy trade-off, but the Hisense H9 series manages to go just a bit brighter (1,275.03cd/m^two) and a little darker (0.04cd/k²), for an even better dissimilarity ratio (31,876:1).

The higher up nautical chart shows the 6-Serial' color levels measured through the K-10A (afterwards profiling the Boob tube with an 10-Rite i1 Pro two spectrometer), with a standard dynamic range signal compared with Rec.709 broadcast standard values on the left, and an HDR signal compared with DCI-P3 digital cinema values on the right. SDR colors are mostly spot-on out of the box, though greens and yellows are slightly undersaturated. HDR colors are also very stiff, covering most of the DCI-P3 color space. The biggest complaint with colour accuracy is magenta leaning a bit too warm, simply it's not a terrible flaw.

BBC'south Pet Earth II looks bright and vibrant on the half-dozen-Series. In Bright HDR mode, the greens of leaves and the blues of water are vivid and rich, perhaps to the betoken of looking a bit cartoonish. Dark HDR fashion tames the saturation while keeping tones looking very natural. In both modes, fine details appear clearly, with the textures of both night and calorie-free fur coming through in sun and under shade.

The red of the title grapheme'south costume in Deadpool looks vibrant and saturated in both Vivid and Dark HDR modes, though the Nighttime mode is preferable for keeping skin colors accurate. In the film's called-for lab fight scene, shadow details come up through clearly against the bright flames in both modes, though the fires are wildly oversaturated in the Bright HDR manner. Stick to Night HDR, which is more accurate and, co-ordinate to our measurements, not actually darker (in terms of summit brightness) than HDR Vivid mode.

The Great Gatsby looks first-class on the 6-Series in Dark HDR mode. The contours and textures of black suits and hair in the political party scenes can be clearly seen while still looking very dark, and the whites of the lights and balloons await accurate, if a chip subdued. The Bright HDR manner brings out the highlights, but it likewise oversaturates colors a bit, and loses some of the scene's residuum.

Input Lag

The amount of time between when a TV receives a point and the screen updates is known as input lag, and it's of import for video games. The 6-Series has a Game manner divide from its flick modes that greatly improves input lag at the expense of some picture quality.

The Hisense line can get a fleck brighter and a scrap darker than the 6-Series to offer fifty-fifty better contrast, has slightly more accurate colour performance out of the box, and its Android TV platform offers a fleck more than functionality than Roku Telly does. We tin can easily recommend either Goggle box, and the TCL is a bit less expensive, but the Hisense H9 line only barely edges it out as our selection in the sub-$1,000 category. If you want improve functioning, meanwhile, you need to be ready to spend several times as much on an LG C9P or Sony A8G OLED TV.
